Essax Saddle Guide - Which Saddle Is For You

Before I get onto the in's & out's of which saddle would best suit you its important I explain the AF-Net technology that is one of the many things that make Essax Saddles so special.

AF-NET
AF-Net or Anti Fatigue Net to give it its full title is a revolutionary move forward in saddle technology. The AF-Net matrix that is built into every Essax Saddle has been proven through totally independent testing to improve performance by an average of 4%.

In the independent test Caja Rural rider Garcia Raul Alarcon was asked to hold  200,300 & 400W for 15 minute periods with a 10minute rest period between each set at 150W.

The test was held over 3 days, testing saddles in different orders and every time the riders heart rate was lower using the Essax saddle to maintain the same wattage output. So in short the rider was having to work less to output the same power. When he worked at the same heart rate his power output was far greater hence providing a performance gain through Af-Net technology.
One of these tests that is published at the end of this blog showed a 2.5% performance gain with an Essax saddle against a Fizik Arione saddle and in all tests an average of +4% has been found.

New technology AF-NET.
Tested by the professional team of Caja Rural:

ANTI FATIGUE NET:
+38%  more rigid
+63%  more rigid to the sitting impact
+70%  more resistance to dynamic fatigue
+4,7% more efficiency & improved performance

Quick Essax Saddle Guide

Essax Shark Saddle.
All the features and benefits are so in depth I suggest you read my blogpost on the saddle here. The small fin is for road riding and the medium fin is for TT, Track & Triathlon where you are sat down on your saddle the majority of the time.

Performance Saddle
If its a pure performance saddle you are looking for then look no further than the Adrenaline R. Its available in a raft of colour options to colour co ordinate your beloved steed. Its available with Chrome , Titanium & super light Carbon Rail.

Performance/Sportive
If you want a balance between performance and comfort then the Adrenaline Tech is perfect. It shares the same shell as its big brother the Adrenaline R but features 5mm extra padding on the rear and 1mm on the nose to help with those long days in the saddle. The Adrenaline tech is available in Chrome  and Titanium Rail.

TT/Triathlon
Essax saddles with the Af-Net technology are perfect for riders racing against the clock or riding in an aero position. The Shark with the medium fin is mainly designed for cycling disiciplines where you are sat down most of the time. The benefits of the Shark are explained here in detail. If the Shark feels a step to far then the 226 is specially designed for TT and Triathlon riders with padding added to where you need it and an extra grippy cover used to stop you from moving forward on your saddle. The 226 comes in Chrome and Titanium Rail.

Track
Simply the Shark with the medium fin is incredible in this enviroment. You get all the performance, biomechanical benefits and it also helps you steer to hold that tiger line round the track.

Entry Level
If you want to get the benefit of the performance enhancing Af-Net technology without spending a lot of money. Then at an RRP of £24.99 the MX-R offers amazing value and comes with a steel rail.

Suffer From Numbness or Loss Of Sensation
Its a common problem that can ruin riders enjoyment of this great sport on long rides. The good news is that Essax has 2 great soloutions. The Biomechanical Singel and Advance 2 both have a central channel that relieves pressure in the perineal/genital area to take away that pressure that causes the discomfort. The Singel has more padding and a deeper channel than the Advance 2. The Advance 2 is a cheaper model with a steel rail if you are on a budget. The Singel is available both with Steel and Chrome Rail.

Womens Saddles
Without stating the obvious women are built differently to men and different saddles will suit their anatomy. Women can obviously use unisex saddles but the Singel and Advance 2 with the central channel are a great fit for women riders.

MTB/XC
The high end MTB offering is the Adrenaline XC which is the same saddle as the Adrenaline R but has Kevlar added to the rear of the saddle to make it more durable. If you are on a bit more of a budget then the Mud XC and entry level MX offer better price points and more padding/comfort.

Urban
If you are looking for a super comfy saddle for that family bike that feels like sitting on a cushion then the Malmo is the perfect option, very cheap too.

Essax Shark Saddle

What type of person are you ?
Are you person 1 who follows the crowd and will go with the conventional ?
Or are you person 2. who is open to new methods and potentially innovative new ways of looking to improve and do things better.

Two strange questions to start a cycling blog with but in the case of The Essax Shark Saddle its actually very important. The reason for this is that person 1 will immediately ridicule the picture below where as person 2 will be intrigued to know more.
British Cycling & Team Skys success was built by a lot of person 2s by the way.

The Essax Shark is available in Black & White with 3 rail options and 2 fin options

I have to admit when I first saw the shark my person 1 was trying to come out in me,my chimp if you like to use a Steve Peters analogy but overall I was intrigued by this thing that just looked wrong on every level. It was at Eurobike that we got some serious time to sit down with Essax and have the explanations of why Essax saddles are so special.  As I sat there listening to Erlin from Essax explain the features and benefits of the brands products I quickly realised that these guys are not just looking to produce pretty looking saddles. Oh no these guys are looking to push the envelope of saddle design with innovative new ideas and technology.

AF-NET TECHNOLOGY
AF-Net or Anti Fatigue Net to give it its full title is a matrix built into the shell of every Essax saddle. Its a matrix that stiffens the shell which helps get more out of your pedal stroke with nothing being lost by the shell flexing . The Essax website claims a performance gain on avg of 4.7% and 70% more resistance to dynamic fatigue across all tests. By anyones standards they are some very lofty claims indeed so I asked if Essax would commit to another totally independant test against a Fizik Arione. The Arione is the worlds best selling and most popular saddle, there was no hesitation " Give us 2 weeks " they said confidently.

True to their word 2 weeks later a testing report landed in my inbox for the models Adrenaline R and Shark against a Fizik Arione using a top professional rider from Caja Rural.
Y
Essax provide saddles to the Caja Rural Pro Team who ride the Tour Of Spain every year...

Now Im afraid I cant divulge the fantastic results of the Shark till the Spring but as boasted the Adrenaline R had a clear 2.5%  performance gain over the highly rated Fizik. I have posted the comprehensive test report at the bottom of this blog where you will see that each time the rider had a lower heart rate to maintain the same power so hence he was working less to maintain the same power output on the Essax Saddle.
Now 2.5% may not sound a lot but over a sportive it adds up to a lot when your working hard for 6-8hrs and any help is good...right ?

Also its important to note that Essax has saddles in its range for every genre of cycling. Yes the Shark,Adrenaline R and 226  are geared around cutting edge performance with Af-Net,Biomechanics and low weight. The great thing is that Essax also has saddles for Sportive, MTB, An entry level saddle in the MX-R for £24.99, Urban saddles, biomechanical saddles to help with loss of sensation in the Singel and the Advance 2. They even have a family saddle in the Malmo and the great thing is that they all have the same Af-Net tech built into the shell as the more expensive performance models.

The Shark Saddle
So based on seeing the testing data for both the Shark and the Adrenaline R I decided I want a bit of this and ordered a Shark with Titanium Rails from Essax. Having made that decision ìts key that you order the right spec. What im about to say now is my advice from working with the brand and my understanding of the product which is now very detailed. The Shark comes in 2 fin sizes with the medium being the largest and the small being the next size down. If you are wanting to do any disciplines where you are sat down for the majority of the time like track, time trialling or triathlon then the medium fin is for you. If you are looking to do road riding then the small fin is the one to go for.

Setting it up & 1st Ride
The one thing that Essax make very clear is that the fitting of the saddle is absolutely crucial to getting the advantages from the design and not having any obvious problems with having a fin positioned in the wrong place. They strongly advise going to a professional bike fitter and I concur with that advice. It does come with a 4 page A4 fitting guide which I decided to use to set it up myself on the turbo trainer as I have been educated on the product.

Starting off the saddle should be absolutely flat and level so a spirit level is required. I started off by setting it in a fairly central position on the rails and got on the turbo, i didnt get very far before I realised that it was set too far forward and to quote the fitting guide the fin was aggrevating me :-/.

I then went through an hour of making micro adjustments till it felt right. You should feel it but only as a guide making you sit properly centered on the saddle. Did it feel odd at 1st , surprisingly not at all because when your sat on a bike your not sat straight upright you are at an angle so the highest part of the fin is away from you. It felt comfortable straight away with you feeling that you are sat right on your ishial sit bones as you should be. You can feel the fin but not in an uncomfotable way, its just there centralising you on the saddle.

With me 90 minutes into my 1st ride it began to feel very normal and its hard to put it into words,my weight left/right and forward just felt in a better place as I turned the pedals,, you feel so much more stable and you dont rock as much in fact it makes you realise how much you rocked from side to side before. Rocking on your saddle and hip rotation affects your effiency and performance massively so you immediatlely feel like your making more watts count. After another couple of rides my sitbones will get used to this position and I know then that I wont even think about the saddle again.

Benefits
The shark is pretty obviously a revolution in saddle design rather than evolution so why did I put one on my bike. Well after learning about the AF-Net performance gain I was always going to put an Essax saddle on my bike of some sort. Originally I was going to go for the Adrenaline R as its a high performance saddle that comes in a raft of colour options to colour co ordinate my beloved steed.
Over time though I started to realise that the shark had extra benefits on top of the Af-Net. This was born out by the staggering test results that the shark came back with over the Fizik Arione which will be published in the Spring.
The truth is that a very high percentage of us dont sit correctly on our saddle and favour our stronger side, in my case im right handed so I sit slightly to the right and pedal prodominately with my right leg. This is not good biomechanically on your back in particular which can lead to other muscular problems, aches, pains and its not very efficent. It also gives you a much more stable platform which prevents hip rotation and rocking on your saddle, most of us do this without realising it.
When you ride the shark for the 1st time you realise this as you feel in a different position to before but now the correct position. Now that I am sat in the correct position without realising it I am now pedalling more evenly and efficently with my right and left leg, not rocking and making every pedal stroke more efficent thus improving your performance.

The wattbike is a great piece of kit and is designed to help you to pedal more evenly as well as being a great training tool in many other ways, the shark helps you with this same philosophy.
When you put the Af-Net, the biomechanics and the peddling effiency together you have a huge gain in performance by using this product and we have the testing data to prove it, mine will be staying on my bike for a long time to come. Also its worth mentioning that one of the Caja Rural Riders rode the 2014 Tour of Spain on the Shark after feeling its benefits in training performance wise and with a medical condition he was suffering with.

If the Shark feels like a step too far then as mentioned all Essax saddles feature the performance enhancing Af-Net technology. The extensive range consists of Biomechanical, Road,MTB,Urban,Womens and Triathlon saddles.

You can view the full range here on the distributor website.

Im convinced from working with the brand that in the coming years Essax will become the next BIG saddle brand.

People are generally scared of the unusual and its easier to go with the crowd to feel comfortable. Did people laugh at Graham Obree's style or Greg Lemonds aero helmet when they first saw it,Yes but they were not laughing when one was breaking records and the other was helping him win a Tour De France.

Right now some very influential people who's job it is to find an extra edge for their athletes have seen the data which is conclusive and are taking the next steps of investigation. If this comes to fruition then the scepticism would disapear over night because these guys dont put anything on a bicycle unless its got a good damn reason for being there.

Dont be person number 1 and dismiss on looks alone ,be person number 2 and know that every time you head out on your bike you will have a significant advantage over all those person number 1s on your club ride, sportive, time trial or race..

Craig

P.S Another nice feature as well is that every Essax saddle is hand made in Spain, no far eastern mass cheap production here which trust me is very rare these days in the cycling industry.

AfterShokz Sportz M2 Open Ear Sport Headphones with Mic Review

Product Description From The Aftershokz Website

"With 21 total improvements over the first generation, AfterShokz Sportz M2 open ear headphones are designed to safely keep joggers, bike riders, skateboarders, hikers and other athletes connected to their music and social life while remaining active. Featuring military special ops bone conduction technology, AfterShokz Mobile headphones sit comfortably in front of the ear, keeping your ears open, while delivering stereophonic sound through the listener’s cheekbones to the inner ear, permitting users to hear ambient noises such as oncoming traffic, car horns, ambulances or other warning noises."

I have to start this review by saying that I took on this testing with the firm view that headphones should NEVER be worn while riding your bike. UK roads are a dangerous place and deriving yourself of one of your key senses is asking for trouble.

I first became fully aware of Aftershokz at the London Bike Show when their stand was across the corridor from our Nrg4 stand. We got chatting and they explained the benefits of the product with the main one being that they allow you to hear exterior ambient noise while listening to your music essentially through your cheekbones. I was skeptical to say the least but was more than happy to do a review at their request.

Getting Started
Upon getting home I opened the very nice packaging to be greeted by a sweet storage case. I unzipped it and inside were my headphones,USB charging cable, instructions and adapter cable.  The 1st thing you need to remember with these headphones is that the technology requires you to charge them before use. Aftershokz claim you get 12hours playing time from a full charge so no problem for today's 50 mile cafe run.

The morning of the 1st test ride arrived and after getting kitted up I unplugged them from the charger to get them set up.
This is extremely simple with the headphone plug going into your phone or MP3 player, the controller box where the mic and controls are situated clips onto the collar of my jersey and the headphones fit nicely around your ears. The 1st ride was a very cold brisk affair so my winter gloves were required which was to prove a little bit of a problem later on in the ride.
The first pleasing thing was that they did not interfere with my Kali Phenom helmet whatsoever, in fact if it wasnt for the music I wouldnt be very aware I had them on at all.

First Ride
So as I started off rolling along with music clearly ringing in my ears I was more than a little nervous as I waited for the first vehicle to brush me with its wing mirrors.Much to my surprise I clearly heard the first car approach from behind well before it was on me. This increased my confidence massively and I reached straight for the volume control on the control box. It quickly became apparent that my thick winter gloves and the little buttons on the control box were not going to be good bedfellows. The control box has a number of key controls at your finger tips so you dont have to remove your phone from your back pocket.

  • On / off Switch
  • Added volume control
  • Answer Calls button
  • Microphone
  • Built-in micro USB charging port
  • Play / pause / advance / rewind music
  • Smaller lithium ion battery with 12 hours playtime

Obviously the control box has to be compact and small but it does mean that locating the little buttons with thick gloves on is impossible so I pulled over, removed my gloves and upped the volume to max.On later rides where I used fingerless gloves this was not a problem whatsoever.

As I now entered the busy roads of Preston I was astonished to how aware I was of all the noises around me even though I could clearly hear my music pumping away. The bone conduction technology really works in transferring the music so that you can hear it. The headphones don't sit anywhere near your ears as you can clearly see from the picture I took below when I eventually arrived at my cafe stop.Your ears are completely left free to hear all ambient noise around you.

I was wearing the Aftershokz headphones on the video below on one of the test rides and you can clearly see that they don't have any issues with my road helmet and sit nicely around my ears.

Even when I was riding along a quiet country lane in my own little world completely lost in my music I could still hear a car approaching from behind well in advance of it arriving.

In an ideal world I prefer to ride with a group of friends and enjoy the social side of my cycling. Sometimes that isn't always possible and you have to train alone or as in my case at the moment im riding alone while I try to get my fitness back so I can slot back into a group and not be a liability. Having some music to listen to when riding solo on a long ride can be a real help in enjoying the ride and I believe with the right music can actually improve your performance.

Music Quality
Trust me when I say that you will be very surprised at how well you can hear music through your cheekbones. Is it as crystal clear as having conventional headphones stuck in your ears.... NO.. Is it clear enough to really enjoy the music as you ride along...absolutely YES.

In Closing
Having used the product for 2 months now I highly recommend the Aftershokz headphones if you want to enjoy listening to music while out on your bike and stay safe around traffic. With them being sweat and waterproof they are perfect for all outdoor activity's as well as cycling.

Also as a side issue and worth noting is that I have found these make a fantastic hands free kit for your car or for using on skype calls.

The M2s that I used have an RRP of £69.99 and are available from multiple online and high street stockists

Aftershokz have a brand new bluetooth version coming very soon which have multiple improvements and I am looking forward to testing those for another review in the coming months.

Pros

  • Enjoy Music while riding your bike
  • Still be able to hear ambient sounds like traffic and feel safe
  • No fit problems in your ears or earphones continually falling out of your ears
  • No lasting damage to your eardrum through listening to loud music
  • A healthier way of hearing

Cons

  • You do have to remember to charge them up
  • Control box buttons are too small for thick winter gloves.

Aerozine Bottom Brackets

The Bottom Bracket is a fairly uninspiring but vitally important component on your bike.

Most of us, (including me in the past) when we need a new one go online and purchase the part that suits your particular groupset of choice.

The question is can your bottom bracket do more for your performance than you realise and at an affordable price?

The answer with Aerozine Ceramic BBs is without doubt YES and you have the added bonus of being able to personalise your bike with a choice of colours.

Now normally the mere mention of ceramic bearings makes your wallet groan and baulk at the prospect of separating with a 3 figure sum. Well that needn't be the case with the Aerozine ceramic bearing bottom brackets available from NRG4 Dealers. Lets be clear about one thing, ceramic bearings are significantly better than standard bearings and will help your performance, its not going to turn you into Chris Froome but every bit helps...... right.

Aerozine bottom brackets are available in Road & Mountain Bike versions and I am working closely with Aerozine right now through NRG4 to produce bottom brackets using washers that will fit both MTB & Road #clever. They come in 2 versions with standard bearings and ceramic bearings in a multitude of anodised colour options to bling up your bike to make it stand out from the crowd.

Since becoming a shareholder in Nrg4 I have said to many people that I believe the Aerozine brand is a hidden gem of the cycling industry, when people actually see the products the penny drops with the quality of the finish and craftsmanship shining through.

Aerozine Standard Steel Bearings have an RRP of £19.99.
Aerozine Ceramic Bearings have an RRP of a staggering £44.99.

Is it going to last as long as a Hope or Chris King Ceramic BB..... No but at this price you shouldnt expect it to. A Chris King ceramic BB can set you back as much as £195

If you maintain your bike well after wet dirty rides and dont just throw it in the garage then these BBs will give you lots of ceramic miles for your money. With all the anodised colours at your disposal you can also pimp your ride and make it totally unique to you. My Black Red Onix RH Pro has been fitted with Red Aerozine BB, QR titanium skewers, spacers and chainring bolts that really made a difference to the bling factor.

So if you want to make that little extra difference to your performance and the look of your bike then you wont go far wrong with these on your mountain or road bike.
You can find your nearest dealer here and if they dont have any in stock they will be able to order one for you and you can browse more of the excellent Aerozine Range here.

Thats it for now.

Kali Phenom Road Helmet

In my previous life with Onix Bikes I was lucky enough to ride prototype bikes before they were launched and now at the helm of Nrg4 I get to try out all manner of new cycling products & components before they launch or become available to the public. Its a burden im willing to bear !

Nrg4 is constantly being contacted by brands who want to establish a place in the UK cycling market. When Kali Helmets, or Kali Protectives to give them there full name blipped on our radar I have to confess I didnt know much about them at all. On reflection the reason for this is that I am a keen roadie, up until now Kali have concentrated and built their considerable cycling reputation in the MTB and Downhill market.

I took a look at their website and they had a wide selection of high quality helmets in those 2 category's as well as some sweet bmx and kids offerings. The problem I had is that the one road version advertised was quite obviously just their top end MTB helmet with the peak removed and it didn't look like a road helmet.

So we contacted them voicing our concerns that the road market is exploding in the UK and that a more extensive range is required for us to consider the investment. The reply came back with a certain swagger "we have a new road range for 2014 and we will send you a sample". 5 days later a Kali Phenom road helmet landed on my desk and it changed EVERYTHING !
Kali Phenom Green And White

The 1st impression that hits you when you see the Phenom is the sleek design and cool colour scheme, when you remove it from the box its the light weight, this is a feather weight weighing in at an astonishing 280g for the medium which puts it out there as one of the lightest helmets on the market, if not the lightest.
As a long head I have always had a problem with finding a lid that doesn't look like a huge mushroom on my head, my Giro Atmos obviously offers protection but it makes me look like a toadstool.
Upon wearing the Phenom for its 1st outing a quick look in the mirror was pleasantly greeted by a reflection bearing no fungi whatsoever.
The reason for the lack of fungi quality's and lightweight is explained by Kali's market leading Composite Fusion Plus carbon moulding which put in simple terms uses cones in the composition which allows for less structure being required to acquire the same strength and protection #clever.
Kali Composite Fusion Plus
I have been wearing the Kali Phenom for a number of weeks now and I can honestly say its the best most comfortable helmet I have ever worn, "You would say that" I hear you cry seeing as I am at the forefront of the business selling it in the UK. Well I am going to back that up with some facts. I have already mentioned that it is very light and aesthetically looked by far the sleekest and coolest helmet to ever sit upon my swede without a mushroom in sight.

Lightweight & Sleek Styling

The other major benefit I have found while wearing this helmet is what Kali call the Bumper Fit system which is unique. The area at the front of the helmet has a membrane that cushions and moulds to the shape of your head. We have all stopped at the cafe and seen your fellow rider with little red marks on their forehead where the helmet has rubbed slightly, these are called hotspots. With the Kali bumper fit system that is present on both road models the helmet adjusts to fit you and eliminates hot spots for extra comfort. Also included are supervents that give you great circulation to help keep you cool in the summer,a dial adjust system which allows you to adjust the fit with one hand which is another neat little feature, aero winter cover and bug liner.
Phenom Technology's

The Kali Phenom is going to be available in 4 different colour schemes from March 2014 and will retail for £149.99. I could continue to wax lyrical but some products just speak for themselves and you can just see the quality of the Phenom in the image gallery below.

Kali Phenom Black & Yellow
Kali Phenom Red & White

Kali Phenom Black & White

If your budget cant quite stretch to the Kali Phenom then the new Kali Loka road helmet also offers fantastic quality and tech at a lower price point. It has 2 models that will be available in Black & Red from March 2014 and features composite fusion plus, bumper fit, dial adjust, aero winter cover and bug liner for £89.99
Kali Loka Red

Kali Loka Black
Loka Technology's
If you are thinking of treating yourself to a new road helmet for next season then I assure you these are worth waiting for as I believe they are going to be the best road helmets on the market for the money next year in the UK.

Thats it for now..
